Peyton Pinkerton is a musician most associated with playing a particular brand of angular, spangly and energeticguitar for various artists including Silver Jews, PerniceBrothers, Spouse and his own seminal indie-rock band of 20 years, New Radiant Storm King (NRSK).
Peyton was born and raised in Pleasantville, New York before going to Hampshire College in 1989 to study philosophy. He eventually decided to focus on painting and music. He co-founded NRSK with three other friends during his first year at Hampshire where he established his songwriting skills and recognizable guitar sound.
NRSK recorded ten albums and several 7″ singles from 1990-2008. They also frequently played live with many of their contemporaries including Guided By Voices, Grifters, Pavement and Sebadoh. They even opened for Nirvana well before Nevermind‘s release hit the big time. NRSK went on to be an important band in the early 90s alternative music and continued touring and recording until their demise in 2010.
In the interim, Peyton recorded and toured with literary underground heroes Silver Jews (Drag City) and Joe Pernice’s pop ensemble Pernice Brothers (Sub Pop/Ashmont Records). For two decades, Peyton extensively toured the world, sometimes playing to crowds as large as 30,000 people on the European festival circuit as well as playing to a mere six people in tiny clubs stateside—and everywhere in between.
Peyton lives in Holyoke, Massachusetts, where he writes and records in his home studio. He also works as an arranger, recording engineer, producer and co-writer with other artists.
